Mobile telecommunications operator MTN Congo Brazzaville will increase subscriber numbers by upgrading network capabilities and extending network coverage throughout 2007, says new CEO Eric Tronel.
The company will shortly change to Ericsson network technology, says Tronel.
The MTN Group recently signed a contract with Ericsson to expand network operations across Africa, with MTN Congo Brazzaville being a key candidate.
Ericsson has focused on upgrading and introducing new technology in the region, Tronel says. The new network technology will allow the group to offer innovative value-added services, as well as GPRS, and increase subscriber capabilities, he notes.
Tronel says the mobile telecoms operator is also increasing MTN's coverage area in the Congo. "Aside from upgrading the network and changing technology providers, the company will implement new sites around the country.
"The priority is to give national coverage to the population," he says.
"We are filling the coverage gaps in the country, emphasising the areas our competitors do not cover."
Through network upgrades and expansion programmes, MTN Congo Brazzaville hopes to increase its subscriber base, which currently stands at around 300 000, he adds.
SA's MTN acquired a 100% stake in Libertis Telecom in December 2005. Libertis had an estimated market share of 39%, with 210 000 subscribers, at the time. The mobile telecoms penetration rate in the country is 28%, in a market of 3.4 million people.
Tronel joins MTN Congo Brazzaville after three years at Telecel Benin and one-and-a-half years at Telecel Burkina Faso. He previously held various positions in the telecoms industry in Europe.
MTN operates in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East. MTN recorded over 40 million subscribers across its operations at the end of 2006.
