MTN has stepped up to the front-line in the “mobile price war” with an international call rate promotion that sees up to 100% discount on calls to designated international destinations - subject to terms and conditions.

The MTN Zone International Calling promotion, applicable to customers on MTN Zone PayAsYouGo and MTN Zone TopUp price plans, offers discounts of between 10% and 100% on its current fixed international calling rates.

The discounts apply between 6am and 6pm, from Monday to Friday, and are dependent on the particular country being called. “Certain countries shall receive a discount between 10% and 90% [and] certain countries shall receive a 100% discount,” says MTN. The 100% discount, however, is only applicable for one hour.

MTN says the 200-plus countries included in the list for discounted call rates will vary during the promotional period, which is from 1 November to 31 January.

Countries to which MTN's promotional rates will apply can be viewed on the operator's Web site, or by dialling *111*2# from a cellphone.

First to the frontline

Last week, the two networks introduced three-month international call rate promotions - within days of each other.

First to fire was Vodacom, with an 89c per minute deal (on per second billing). The promotion, applicable to 52 countries, was at the time positioned as the “lowest rate in SA when making international calls directly from a cellphone” and followed Cell C's pioneer move in August that saw calls to 177 countries cut to 99c per minute on per second billing.

Two days later Cell C returned fire, undercutting Vodacom's 89c promotion by 4c - stripping SA's largest mobile operator of its claim to “lowest rates” in the process. Cell C's promotion sees calls to 50 international destinations cut to 85c per minute on per second billing.

Vodacom and Cell C's promotions are currently active, and will run until the end of December and the end of January next year, respectively.
