Second operator MTN extended reduced international calling rates to contract customers with a promotion it says allows its postpaid base to make calls at reduced rates to over 200 destinations.
Until the end of January next year, says MTN, contract customers will pay 75c a minute (on per-second billing) for calls to the US, UK, France, Portugal, Germany, China, India and Nigeria.
MTN chief marketing officer Brian Gouldie says customers can dial *111*2# for more information on the reduced international rates.
The operator says the promotion comes in time for the festive season, when customers have an increased desire to connect with family and friends outside of SA.
In May, MTN's rival Vodacom launched International Calling Plus, a permanent rate for prepaid, TopUp and contract customers that offers call rates from 89c per minute on per second billing. The product costs R5 per month.
Some of the destinations Vodacom customers can call at the rate of 89c per minute include Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
In late 2012, Cell C nudged competition in the international call rate arena when it extended its 99c per minute call rate to 177 countries - in addition to the 50 countries already on that rate.
At the time, Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig said the move came after extensive negotiations for better termination rates with the operator's international partners.
