Africa's largest cellular operator, MTN, did not include revenue from SMSes when working out revenue from Nigeria.
As a result, the company has had to restate the average revenue per user in Nigeria for the quarter to September. The figure has improved and the change results in average revenue per user (ARPU) declining 3%, and not the original 6% as reported.
However, year-to-date ARPU remains at $12, the company says. MTN did not clarify what the impact on its revenue line would be after the ARPU figures were restated.
In its previous report, released in October, the company said ARPUs in Nigeria were relatively flat.
Nigeria accounts for 58% of the company's subscribers in the West and Central African region. The country saw a 5% increase in its subscriber base, to 28.75 million, in the three months to September.
This was due to continued network roll-out, innovative product offerings and the effectiveness of the distribution channels implemented earlier in 2009, MTN said.
