MTN is following up on a “call concerning the safety of its property on 14th Avenue, in Fairland, Johannesburg”, after reports of a bomb scare at the cellular operator's headquarters hit Twitter.
An MTN spokesperson said this morning that the company could not immediately disclose details as to the origin or motivation behind the call, but said it would keep the media and the public informed.
“The matter has been duly handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS) for further investigation,” said MTN in a statement.
MTN SA MD Karel Pienaar says operations at the head office are running smoothly, following a “quick response and efficiency” from the SAPS and Johannesburg Metro Police Department.
The security alarm comes amid reports of unrest involving MTN Nigeria. According to Nigerian discussion forum nairaland.com, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta this weekend threatened to bomb telecommunication giant MTN, SACOIL and other investments of SA in Nigeria, due to “the alleged interference of president Jacob Zuma in its struggle for justice in the Niger-Delta”.
