Internet and VPN service provider, MTN Network Solutions, recently committed to spending a minimum of R40 million on fibre bandwidth over the next three years, making it the third largest independent international supplier of fibre-based Internet and VPN services in SA.
Says Stuart Hardy, Sales and Marketing Director for MTNNS: "Fibre offers a far more consistent platform for delivering Internet and VPN-related traffic, than traditional satellite services. Because of the substantial increase in value and slight increase in cost, we believe that the majority of our clients will move onto this platform."
As more South African companies do business with international markets, there is a greater requirement for stable, fast and secure communication options.
"The already live international fibre network is terminating in both the US and Europe, and will be able to facilitate Internet and VPN traffic. MTN believes that the fibre is an essential part of doing business internationally as it is already an international standard and is often the minimum requirement for running certain applications or business tools," says Hardy.
Bandwidth pricing for the international fibre service from MTNNS comes in at approximately 20% less than the majority of the fibre suppliers in SA. "We wanted to be sure that we remained competitive in this market, irrespective of the premium that we pay for the fibre infrastructure."
MTN Network Solutions believes it will double its fibre capacity over the next year because of demand, competitive pricing and the migration from current satellite users. "At this stage it is an exciting market as the whole industry is changing to fibre and not making that move could be dangerous for service providers."
