MTN Networks Solutions establishes POP in Gaborone

By MTN Network Solutions
Johannesburg, 02 Nov 2004

MTN Network Solutions, the network service provider owned by the MTN and Johncom Groups, has completed a major roll-out of six new points of presence (POPs).

"At the end of 2004, we set ourselves the target of having the most widely distributed MPLS network in the SADC region," says Mike Brierley, CEO. "This target has been achieved. Our team has just completed the last installation of this planned first phase roll-out, and over the past 10 months we have increased our number of POPs from 10 to 16.

"This includes two fully enabled MPLS POPs in Windhoek, Namibia and Gaborone, Botswana. We are busy working with MTN Nigeria, and hope to have a fully established node in Lagos in the first quarter 2005. We believe MTN NS now has the most widely deployed MPLS network in southern Africa, and perhaps even in Africa. Our strategy is to be able to offer our large corporate clients, who have branches in all the major cities, a low-cost access and VPN solution to all their offices."

The places we now cover are: Johannesburg (two POPs), Durban (two POPs), Cape Town (two POPS), Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Empangeni, George, Windhoek and Gaborone.

Our POPs are always deployed into MTN sites, which offer MTN NS state of the art environments, including a full range of facilities like access control, fire protection, emergency power and air-conditioning. The existence of the MTN switching centres and remote switching centres allows MTN NS to deploy POPs at a very rapid rate, allowing MTN NS to meet customer demand across the entire country. Future POPs that have been planned include Swaziland, Kimberley and Klerksdorp.
