MTN has launched a prepaid top-up service through MTNICE that allows MTN prepaid users to top up their airtime and that of their friends and family from a cellphone.
MTN`s consumer portal manager Gary Trehair says the system is linked to the user`s credit card and debits it at their request.
"Once the user has registered on MTNICE, they are able to phone 556 from their cellphone and top-up their account via the interactive voice response system."
The primary user can add up to four beneficiaries to the account and top-up their airtime too.
"Once the beneficiary has been added, the primary user can top-up their airtime as well as his or her own account. Alternatively, the beneficiary can be given their own password to top-up their airtime."
Once the transaction has been completed, an SMS confirmation is sent to the primary user. Top-ups for the primary user and/or beneficiary can only be made once daily.
"If the beneficiary tops up their own account, an SMS is also sent to the primary user to make them aware that their credit card has been debited," he says.
Beneficiaries are limited to top-ups of either R30 or R60, while the primary user can top-up their account with up to R300 on a daily basis.
"We`ve limited the amount beneficiaries can top-up with to prevent any abuse of the system. The primary user can also prevent the beneficiary from using the R60 top-up option if they so wish," Trehair says.
To use the service, prepaid users have to register with MTNICE and click through to the prepaid top-up service from the "my phone" menu.
