MTN will issue a tender for a new media buying agency in the second quarter of this year.

The mobile operator's current media agency, OMD, has said it will not pitch for the tender this year, effectively ending a 13-year partnership with MTN.

Josh Dovey, CEO of OMD, declined to comment on why the agency will not pitch for the contract this year.

"MTN has embarked on a phased approach in regard to issuing and renewing contracts with all its suppliers to ensure with sound corporate principles," says Bernice Samuels, GM of marketing and corporate affairs at MTN.

"The remarkable tenure of our relationship is an endorsement of the good work that they [OMD] have delivered for MTN throughout this time," says Ravin Maharaj, media relations manager for MTN.

MTN hopes to have chosen a new agency by the beginning of June. According to Maharaj, the MTN account would be worth about R300 million for one year.

MTN recently signed on Jupiter Drawing Room as its advertising agency.
