MTN Business is building a national fibre network, after the success of its local fibre network in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Internet access, network hosting and converged services into the MTN fibre solution.
“Fibre networks can be complex and, therefore, the offering needs to be backed by strong market capability and knowledge. We are pleased that our network uptime has been 99% and is coupled with consistent strong performance,” says Angela Gahagan, managing executive at MTN Business.
JSE-listed niche bank Sasfin is one of the businesses that run on MTN Business' metro network. “In the modern world, without effective IT and the networks that connect systems, modern banking would not exist. The requirement from the business is that it will not tolerate any downtime,” explains head of infrastructure at Sasfin Lourens van Dyk.
“The challenge was substantial: we moved the data centre, line of business systems and users. The cost of any downtime is easily calculated and understood; it has a rand value.”
Van Dyk says the MTN Business network was useful in this situation, as it is dual-routed.
He explains that any break in the flow of data in one direction means it can automatically flow in the other direction. The dual redundant link allowed Sasfin to move the server room and seamlessly switch over to the data recovery site.
