MTN Business and its customers UNINET and Hetzner are currently taking the top four places on the online Internet speed test Web site Speedtest.net.
The analysis tool on the Web site is used over one million times a day to test bandwidth speeds.
The data, which includes download and upload speeds, round-trip latency, IP address, ISP, and geographic location from the tests performed on Speedtest.net, are collated and averaged together for each country in order to produce the rankings.
South Africa is known for poor Internet speeds and is ranked 91 in the world for download speeds, and 104 for upload speeds. The top spots are dominated by countries in Asia and the Eastern Bloc.
Angela Gahagan, Managing Executive at MTN Business, says that although these tests are good for a high-level benchmark, you need to consider peering and the location of the test servers.
“When looking at the test results, you need to consider where the test server is hosted and what your ISP's interconnection is, like with the test server's ISP.”
The MTN Business network is one of the most rigorously engineered IP networks in South Africa, connecting thousands of corporate customers and many residential customers through its channel programme.
