Nortel Networks is to deliver universal port capabilities and port density for its CVX 1800 multi-service access switch. As service providers are intensely focused on achieving a balance between their investments in infrastructure and the potential revenue gains offered by providing IP services such as modem wholesaling, VoIP, Fax over IP, VPN and tandem access, the CVX 1800 provides a definitive solution for carriers and ISPs.
"Nortel Networks is empowering service providers to capitalise on the explosion in demand for Internet services with the enhanced capabilities of the CVX 1800 access switch," says Lisa Ranger, VP, CVX marketing, Nortel Networks. "By doubling the density and introducing universal port capabilities, Nortel is enabling service providers to take advantage of new revenue streams without the added cost."
Specifically designed for wholesaling, the CVX 1800 can terminate 10 752 simultaneous subscriber calls per rack. With universal port capabilities, the CVX 1800 allows incoming data/VoIP/FoIP calls to be dynamically recognised, so that any service is supported on any available port. Service providers are now able to set up a single network for voice and data, scale their network to meet increasing demand, and deliver profitable value-added IP services.
The ability to establish a single network for voice and data reduces costs, and permits a faster time to market for the service provider. In addition, the operational and real estate cost savings are significant due to the high port density provided by the CVX 1800. With 2 688 ports per shelf, equivalent to the capacity of 4 T3 or 112 T1 lines and with four "shelves" stacked into a 7ft rack, the configuration delivers 10 752 ports. Each CVX shelf also contains 168 hot-swap modems.
The CVX 1800 with enhanced capabilities will be available in the third quarter of 2000. Pricing will range from $200 to $300 per port depending on configuration. Existing customers will need to upgrade both the modem access card and digital access card. Upgrade programs will be available.
