The minister of correctional services, Sibusiso Ndebele, is being taken to court by a prisoner who is "desperate" to complete his law degree, according to the Sunday Times.
The prisoner, Xolani Dlamini, filed an urgent application with the High Court in Durban on Friday morning in a bid to get access to the Internet, a laptop, and printer, the paper reports.
The equipment is reportedly needed so that Dlamini, sentenced to life for murder in 2001, can finish his final year of a law degree through the University of South Africa.
The case has been filed against Ndebele and national correctional services commissioner Tom Moyane, it says.
The paper reports that Dlamini requested the equipment from officials at Durban's Westville prison in March, but was turned down. The handwritten affidavit claims that the lack of access to equipment has negatively affected Dlamini in his studies.
Judge Nompumelelo Radebe ruled that the matter was not urgent and, due to problems with Dlamini's affidavit, new papers would have to be filed by the end of next week.
The Sunday Times notes that a similar application, at the South Gauteng High Court earlier this year, was successful.
