Mustek takes local backup solution to market

Johannesburg, 10 Nov 1998

In the first of several agreements with established distributors, Lennium Technologies, manufacturer of the new Realtime Data Transfer (RDT) solution, has inked a deal with the Mustek Electronics group.

RDT, an automated real time information protection solution developed locally by Lennium, continuously scans and backs up data, even open files, to any mappable drive.

Dean Barkhuizen, the managing director at Mustek, distributor of the well known Mecer line of PCs and components, says his company will have access to RDT for distribution to its nationwide base of over 8 000 resellers. Promoting dealer and end user education is as much a priority as actually selling the product, he says.

"Despite the marketing and press attention storage and backup have been receiving we still find companies and individuals with critical data on their servers, workstation or notebooks and no backup measures in place.

"Our role in this regard is to educate dealers about the benefits of real time information protection as provided by RDT. They can then transfer that knowledge onto the end user."

Barkhuizen concedes that dealers are often interested in the most lucrative products. In the case of RDT, however, performance and functionality have been packed in to a product retailing at a price point significantly lower than most international backup solutions.

By mirroring data to a second hard disk in real time the product can offer a faster, more efficient alternative to tape backup and a much cheaper route compared to a full blown RAID installation. This is one of the selling points dealers should find favourable when selling into large and small sites alike, says Barkhuizen.

Martin Coetsee, the managing director at Lennium Technologies, is optimistic about Mustek's involvement with RDT; he sees the company's nationwide reach as key to taking Lennium's product to the broadest market.

"We are targeting users across the board - in all industries of all sizes. By combining the Mustek reseller network with our own marketing efforts the message should reach the target market."

Coetsee believes RDT's ability to protect individual computers in real time fills a niche in the backup arena.

"We regularly see users in large organisations storing data on their local machines - often because access to the server is limited by network bandwidth or the files are of a personal and security-sensitive nature," he says.

"As a result, the typical overnight 'batch-run' backup model does not constantly protect all users' data. Running RDT on the local machine does so while users work."

In addition to the initial release of the locally developed product an advanced upgrade patch is now available for free to existing users as an incentive via the Web. This advanced patch bolsters RDT such that it can mirror all hidden, system and registry files in real time to the destination drive.

"As a result," says Coetsee, "should a hard disk fail, the backup drive can immediately boot without user configuration; work can therefore continue right from the moment the crash occurred."
