With client/server platforms becoming more dominant in large scale computing environments, data centre managers need to gain high speed access to information held on these systems. Ariel Network Solutions is offering the Open Channel (OC) 9000 from General Signal Networks: a powerful solution that allows high speed, high performance connectivity between IBM/Plug-compatible mainframes and client-server platforms. The Open Channel 9000 provides: * High speed, high volume data sharing between Tandem and Legacy MVS Systems * Information sharing between platforms using similar and dissimilar channel types * Better price/performance and greater flexibility than competitive systems * Simultaneous any-to-any communications between up to 32 multiple and logically partitioned Tandem and MVS systems * Support for bus and tag, fibre optic and SCSI processing channels According to Corni Naud'e, product manager at Ariel Network Solutions, Open Channel 9000 is the world's first high bandwidth connection between IBM mainframes and Tandem processors. With this capability, customers can access data at channel speeds and transfer large volumes of data within a shorter period of time. "More and more customers need to gain high speed access to data held on dissimilar platforms. By developing OC/9000 for high volume data transfer environments, customers can now achieve mixed architecture connectivity and gain high speed access to key information. This availability allows implementation of applications that previously had connectivity and time limit constraints." he says. Applications for the OC/9000 include on-line transaction processing, transaction co-processing, massive file transfers for decision support, archival of data bases for disaster recovery and transaction reporting requirements. As part of General Signal Network`s integrated solutions strategy, the OC/9000 can be combined with Channel Extension products to provide data centre connectivity across mixed-architectures. "Many data centre managers find that their cross platform requirements include connecting S/370 and S/390 architecture CPUs. OC/9000 can provide the connectivity needed for this mixed-architecture environment as well as extending this connectivity to client-server platforms." adds Naud'e. Unlike some competitive multichannel communications units that have two internal data paths, GSN`s solution has up to six internal data paths. This feature maximises throughput and reduces total system vulnerability. With other systems, a bus failure could cut performance levels in half. The OC/9000 greatly reduces any loss of system performance.
