MWeb is offering WTFast software as part of its online gaming experience. The software streamlines game data to international game servers.
“MWeb has made a significant investment in the South African online gaming arena,” says head of MWeb's digital division, Nathier Kasu. He explains that the new software development comes on the back of the ISP's partnership with Gameservers.com and the deployment of Steam Servers, in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The WTFast software is expected to improve latency by ensuring the fastest and most reliable path is used when data is sent to the game server - which MWeb says will improve responsiveness in the game.
“Simply put, when you usually play the game, your data is often going down slow side streets and alleyways. The WTFast software allows your data to be on a fast freeway, with no speed limits, right to the game servers,” explains Kasu.
“The thing about online gaming is that you have to have a lot of people in the game for it to be fun,” explains MWeb online gaming manager Desmond Kurz. “Unfortunately, the servers for the large multiplayer games are located far away - and the worse the connection is, the worse the gaming experience is.
“So while we are working to bring the local gaming experience on par with the international scene, in the meantime we want to ensure our customers have the best possible experience.
“Some of our best and most loyal customers are gamers, so as one of SA's largest ISPs, it makes sense for us to make sure that our customers are getting the best experience possible,” says Kurz.
Looking ahead, Kurz says MWeb plans to keep up with international gaming trends and will continue to try and put the South African gaming scene at the top-of-mind for overseas publishers.
“We are putting our hands up on behalf of SA. Gaming in SA is not stagnating, like it is in other markets, so we're really lobbying overseas publishers and making sure they know we're here, in the hope that they will start paying more attention to our local market.”
