Local social media network Mxit has set up office in India as the first phase of its expansion strategy for the emerging market.

Mxit faces stiff competition in India, with messaging apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat and local player Nimbuzz, which has already gained popularity in the south Asian country.

The expansion into India is coupled with the release of Mxit 7 for both BlackBerry and Android users, who can expect faster, simpler navigation and an improved chat experience in the new version.

Key features for BlackBerry and Android include group chat, backdrop, new profiles with cover images and tablet support.

The Mxit app is available for download across more than 8 000 mobile devices and tablets. Mxit will provide the growing 550 million feature phone users across India with the ability to affordably use their basic data-enabled feature phones for chat, accessing apps and games.

The application is both fast and data-light, allowing feature phone users with even the most basic 2G connection to benefit from an immersive social mobile chat experience, at lower cost than the average SMS, it says.

Sam Rufus Nallaraj has been appointed as CEO of Mxit India.

Mxit chairman Michael Jordaan is in India, and could not immediately be reached for comment.
