I experienced a sense of false hope after watching the awesome beginning cut scene to this game.
The story goes like this: The year is 2021, and the US government has created a small society on a remote island to test their developments in nanotechnology (microscopic machines injected to repair cells in human beings).
Of course things are too good to be true and before you know it, the computer controlling the nanomachines malfunctions and all hell breaks loose.
The nanos form a brain of their own and, using the iron in the resident`s blood, they replicate and turn every living soul on the island into machines.
The government decides it is time to get the best of the best - the only "person" who could be capable of stopping this catastrophe.
Enter Jake Warren, a cyborg with a tainted past. He is brought out of cold storage and given the only weapon that can destroy these monstrosities, the plasma blade. Warren is then dumped into the heat of the action.
From there the game just deteriorates, and it is hard to tell what the developers were thinking when they came up with this mess. It had a strong story and then they suddenly appear to have utterly lost the plot.
The cut scenes are by far the most enjoyable part of this game, while the rest is complete rubbish.
Don`t expect any puzzles or any actual point to this game. In fact, your task in Nanobreaker is all about walking, slicing, killing, splattering and then getting to the next area.
As the eruption of enemy liquid fills the screen, the game keeps score of the ludicrous amount of blood/oil you manage to carve out of your enemy. (Way to go! Carve 'em up and try filling your screen with so much blood that you can`t even see the ground anymore... ridiculous I tell you).
The plasma blade can briefly take the form of a huge axe for a single-target, overhand chop. But it takes so much time for Jake to lift the weapon over his head, that even the slowest enemy has more than enough time get out of harm`s way.
Some other things I didn`t like about the game include: enemies are slow and take far too long to kill; during a fight, the music cuts out and you`re left in silence; the game has five levels, but I don`t see anyone sticking around to finish even the first one.
Graphically, the effects of the plasma blade start off mesmerising, but it soon leaves you disorientated and suffering with a throbbing headache. I would suggest you play this game for only 10-minute periods, in order to give your eyes a break.
I thought Evil Prophecy was bad - well, this one is right up there with it.
Avoid this game and tell all your friends to avoid it too!
