Nanoteq launches VPN security solution

Johannesburg, 28 Oct 1999

Nanoteq, a division of Comparex International, launched a new range of products for securing communications. The IP-Granite product range implements comprehensive network for VPN, remote access and end-to-end applications, using the IPSec network security standard.

IP-Granite provides an easy to use, cost effective and versatile solution for IPSec based network security.

The IPSec protocol is fast becoming the dominant security standard addressing the inherent security problems associated with the Protocol (IP).

The first two products, the IP-Granite W100 and G100 software packages, underwent an international Beta test program during August, with positive feedback received. Other product models, including RISC-based hardware versions are planned for later this year.

Nanoteq director Jaco Botha says the strong encryption techniques within IP-Granite ensure the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of information communicated across a public or private IP network. The IP-Granite suite addresses three important market requirements, namely to secure end-to-end network communication, to secure remote access to corporate networks and to set up VPNs between branches or with business partners. "IP-Granite delivers what IPSec promises," he continued.

"The IP-Granite W100 workstation software unit for Windows platforms provides IPSec security to individual hosts connected to the network. Every host that requires secure communications will be equipped with a software package that performs the IPSec encryption and decryption operations," he adds.

The IP-Granite G100 gateway software provides security between networks using the secured tunnels provided by IPSec. By installing security gateways at the 'edges` of a wide area network (e.g. the Internet), secure 'tunnels` can be built between participating hosts or gateways to form a trusted VPN.

"A complete company security policy can be implemented using the easy to use management software to configure IP-Granite products. Through a graphical interface, it provides the security administrator with the means to control which hosts may establish an IPSec secured communication session with a particular workstation or server on your private network," explains Botha. "All traffic to and from a permitted host will then be secured, while all other traffic will either be rejected or not be secured - depending on the configuration."

IP-Granite provides cost-effective and secure connectivity to field staff and home workers who use the Internet as a virtual private access facility. Its enhanced features and functionality allows companies to set up intra-office VPNs using shared backbones or the Internet. In addition, it sets up networked connections to business partners by building secure extranets - allowing partners to access specific services.

"Whilst the benefits of security are sometimes difficult to measure, the real benefits of securely sharing a standards based network infrastructure with other corporations are obvious. The versatility, cost effectiveness and ease of deployment of IP-Granite makes it an appealing choice to corporations who are serious about security." Botha adds.
