NAS gateway fuels EMC NAS growth

Johannesburg, 19 Apr 2004

EMC has announced that its network attached storage (NAS) business experienced significant growth during 2003 following the introduction of the EMC Celerra NS series of midrange NAS products.

"According to IDC, EMC claimed the number one NAS spot in the fourth quarter and maintained its leadership position for the full-year of 2003," says Alex Robertson, technology solutions group manager, EMC SA. "EMC`s traction continues with new performance measurements for the recently announced NS700 NAS system, published on the SPEC SFS website (www.spec.org)."

According to Robertson, EMC has expanded its NAS product line to address customer and market demands and the performance, functionality, and improved manageability of the company`s offerings are resonating with its customers.

The Celerra NS600 NAS system, introduced in December 2002, and the NS600G gateway, introduced in October 2003, both contributed to EMC`s overall NAS unit growth of nearly 100 percent for 2003.

"Strong customer demand for gateway NAS systems that integrate with EMC SAN environments drove quarterly unit growth of the NS600G to over 200 percent during the fourth quarter of 2003 compared to the previous quarter," says Robertson. "This momentum demonstrates that customers are looking to EMC for their complete networked storage infrastructure and information management requirements."

Increasing demand around the globe and several key trends are contributing to EMC`s NAS growth, adds Robertson, and gateways are the fastest growing segment of the NAS market.

"EMC`s Celerra CNS, NS600G and the NS700G are experiencing rapid growth as customers discover that NAS gateways combine with SANs to offer comprehensive networked storage solutions," he says. "These combined NAS/SAN environments deliver more value to customers by pooling storage to provide better utilisation, flexibility, scalability, and investment protection."
