NASA stores space images

A heavy-duty data storage system by 3Par will house hundreds of thousands of images shot by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, says Biz Journals.

Every half hour, starting with Kepler's February 2009 planned launch, a new high-resolution photo will be transmitted via NASA's Deep Space Network to a 3Par storage server for study by the project's scientific team.

By comparing the brightness of stars dimmed at times by interceding planets in their orbit, NASA scientists expect to identify and learn about new and possibly habitable earth-like planets.

Flash costs going down

According to Network World, experts say the consumer demand for flash and EMC's entry into the enterprise flash market this year are combining to drive prices down, making it feasible for enterprise use.

Big businesses are already starting to use flash storage for input/output-intensive applications, such as Oracle databases, credit card processing systems and stock trading applications.

"This is the most exciting thing that's happened in storage in 20 years," claims John Fowler, the head of Sun's servers and storage division.

Bank uses HP storage

Kuwait's Burgan Bank has signed up HP Middle East to provide the financial institution with new storage and disaster recovery systems, says ITP.net.

HP will provide the bank with its XP24000 storage system, which provides disk-based replication and recovery of business application databases.

Simon Clements, senior general manager for operations at Burgan Bank, claims the bank's continued growth and expansion strategy were the prime movers behind the new system.
