Naspers, MIH improve compliance and planning in R3 mil deal with Intellient

Johannesburg, 31 Jan 2005

In a deal worth over R3 million, multinational multimedia group Naspers has bought two Hyperion applications from Intellient (Pty) Ltd, a member of the EOH Group of companies. The media group will implement Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) throughout its business and Hyperion Planning across its MIH subsidiary.

"Synchronisation of data at MIH was becoming problematic as it outgrew the existing Hyperion Enterprise consolidation application," says Alwin Swales, operations director at Intellient. "The company needed a centralised consolidation, budgeting and planning solution while Naspers required a financial consolidation and reporting solution, which HFM provides."

"We believe that Hyperion Financial Management is the solution that will enable a multinational group such as ourselves to comply with the various regulatory and reporting challenges that we are currently facing," says Nico Marais, the group financial manager for Naspers. "As HFM is a Web-based application, it delivers scalability, collaboration, transparency, integration, interoperability, and a single unified view of key financial data at any given moment. Beneficial to all large and complex organisations like Naspers, it also generates consolidated results for both internal management and external legal and regulatory purposes.

"Key for Naspers is that Hyperion Financial Management has out-of-the-box features that ensure all submissions required by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are completely loaded, reviewed, approved and electronically signed off prior to consolidation," Swales says. "Hyperion Planning facilitates all aspects of the collaborative planning and decision-making process, including the allocation and communication of top-down targets, tactical bottom-up planning, and realtime updates and forecasts."

As Swales mentions, MIH itself was driven by the need for a budgeting and forecasting solution that would enable it to create and analyse scenarios and plan effectively. Hyperion Planning is a Web-architected solution that enables multiple planning tasks using thin client technology. It`s reporting and analysis capabilities allow users to manage all reporting tasks and plan reviews and analyses.

In phase one of the implementation, Intellient, Naspers and MIH are undertaking discovery and design work to determine project requirements and definitions. One instance of Hyperion Financial Management and Hyperion Planning have been bought, with future plans to license more than 200 Hyperion Financial Management users across Naspers and more than 100 Hyperion Planning users in the MIH Group. The principal activities of Naspers are the operation of pay-television, internet and instant-messaging subscriber platforms and the provision of related technologies, the publishing, distribution and printing of magazines, newspapers and books, and the provision of private education services. Its most significant operations are located in South Africa, Africa south of the Sahara, Greece, Cyprus, Thailand, China, the Netherlands and the United States of America.
