Neotel subscribers in the Sandton and Rosebank areas will experience downtime today, after one of the operator's fibre links was cut by another company working in the area.
“Work being done in that area, by a different company, resulted in the cable being cut in two places. Our technical team has been dispatched to the area to ensure the service is restored as soon as possible,” explains spokesman Albi Modise.
The second national operator did not give an indication of when service would be restored on that portion of the network.
Neotel has also apologised to customers for the inconvenience. “We would like to assure everyone affected that all our energies are being directed at ensuring the service is being restored,” adds the company.
This appears to be the second major network failure the company has experienced since it launched its business service, two years ago. However, one client says the disruption is unacceptable.
ECN CEO John Holdsworth says: “Neotel has experienced its second major table break in three to four months. This is completely unacceptable. We have always said Neotel should have a redundant, fully-meshed, self-healing network to prevent this from happening.”
He says the disruption has affected the “entire” Johannesburg area. “We have had to move all our customers over to other service providers as a solution. Unfortunately, our customers don't understand the complex regulatory environment which we operate in. We lease all our capacity. So this is in no way our own fault.”
