SA's second network operator, Neotel, has launched a phone it says will connect small businesses with access to the lowest call rates in the country. The operator announced NeoSmart, "SA's first mobile smart landline", this morning.
The phone is a dual-SIM Android smartphone capable of connection to both GSM and CDMA networks ? it accepts a GSM SIM for connecting to the user's mobile network of choice, and a CDMA Removable User Identity Module (the equivalent of a SIM card) for connecting to the Neotel network simultaneously. Dual-SIM phones allow the user to use a single phone interface and contact list, while benefiting from the best call rates and package features on both networks.
NeoSmart, says Neotel, combines accessibility and connectivity with affordable fixed-line rates.
"This means that businesses of all sizes can take advantage of increased flexibility, while drastically reducing their overall telecommunications spend," says chief of business solutions, Abid Qadiri. "It means employees will always be connected, in or out of the office."
NeoSmart leverages Neotel's landline rates and newly launched FreeCallZone, which offers free calls to all Neotel numbers within a selected zone. "For a fixed monthly fee, businesses can now create their own FreeTalkZone, which will allow employees to call each other for free, whether they are in the same building, same city or across the country."
FreeTalkZone is a standard voice value-added service which is bundled with, but not limited to NeoSmart, and can also be added to any of Neotel's existing postpaid voice services.
Tech specs
Developed in partnership with HTC and the HTC Desire, the Android OS dual-network phone allows for both CDMA (landline) and GSM (mobile phone) technologies. The display, says Neotel, provides "an amazing viewing experience", while HTC's Beats Audio is installed to meet customers' sound needs.
Additional features include a Removable User Identity Module slot for a Neotel geographic number; SIM slot for a mobile GSM number; EVDO and GPRS capability for mail and calendar; a touch-screen with 16M colours; full Outlook synchronisation and a mail browser.
NeoSmart is available with a choice of monthly package rates, each of which includes free minutes, free data and free SMSes:
- NeoSmart 299 (R399 per month) includes 100 voice minutes, 1GB of data and 100 SMSes.
- NeoSmart 399 (R499 per month) includes 200 voice minutes, 2GB of data and 200 SMSes.
- NeoSmart 499 (R599 per month) includes 300 voice minutes, 3GB of data and 300 SMSes.
Neotel says, for a fixed monthly fee of R49, customers will also have access to free unlimited all day calls between all employees on the FreeTalkZone service (on and off peak).
