NetActive completes successful Skynet installation

NetActive Networking, a division of NetActive Services, has successfully installed IT equipment and set up a national network for top courier company - Skynet Worldwide Express.

Skynet Worldwide recently installed a sophisticated SCO OpenServer 5 parcel system to operate nationally across branches from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban to Nelspruit among others. The company then required that the branches be equipped with up to date technology to run the system and that a network was put in place.

According to Skynet IT Manager Juan Fourie "We needed a fully tracking system and it had to be highly integrated, reliable, user friendly, and cost effective. We need to know where every item is, every step of the delivery process."

Skynet required a Network supplier that has experience of WAN`s via Diginet lines, who could complete the full configuration and installation around the country and one that could supply both the hardware and software. As a result of NetActive`s experience in the provision of turnkey solutions and services made the company a perfect fit for the job.

"NetActive is one of our Premier Partners," says Dave Wilson, SCO Regional Manager. "They not only have considerable SCO skills but are one of our preferred partners on the Compaq side. They can also take a project from A-Z, including on-going support."

To date NetActive has seven Skynet branches up and running on the new system using OpenServer 5.0.4 and CompaqProliant 1600s and Prosignia 200s. As added value to the client, every machine was initially configured and benchmarked at NetActive`s Johannesburg offices to prevent major interruptions at the client`s premises. All future maintenance and support will be performed by NetActive.

The entire solution is comprised of 7 SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 servers running on Compaq hardware over 7 regions. Each region runs their own server networked over a WAN connection. A total of 126 client systems are connected to these servers across the LAN and WAN. The client systems include a variety of technologies including character terminals, MS-DOS workstations, Deskpro 2000 workstations using the hotkey terminal emulation on Windows 95.

"Everything worked first time," says Skynet`s Fourie. "Our customer service levels have increased and we know where the consignments are at all times. Our staff find the systems to be fast, reliable and easy to us. We`re all set for the year 2000."
