NetActive launches e-mail management system to obliterate spam, porn, viruses in the workplace

Johannesburg, 05 Oct 2001

JSE-listed managed Internet service provider, NetActive, has launched an e-mail content security and filtering service for businesses utilising Internet connectivity, in an attempt to obliterate spam, pornography and any e-mail carrying computer viruses in the workplace.

The launch of the e-mail management system is in line with NetActive`s strategy to enable IT to be source of competitive advantage for the mid-tier corporate market, by providing centrally managed, remotely supported solutions, available on one-to-many basis.

"The launch of this service was triggered by the demand in the market for e-mail content security and filtering solutions. Customers want more and more to get rid of the spam, pornography and computer viruses infiltrating their companies," says Corn'e Botha, Product Manager at NetActive.

The system serves as a gateway for e-mails before they reach the e-mail server, filtering the company`s incoming and outgoing e-mail. By reducing e-mail spamming and stopping computer viruses through its filtration process, the service enables effective use of internal network bandwidth, and allows companies to enforce their Internet policies.

An exciting feature of the e-mail management system is its unique user interface. The user interface, developed by NetActive, is based on an application service provider (ASP) model. This allows the user to remotely administer all incoming and outgoing e-mail to his domain name. The user is thus in full control of his e-mail management system.

Companies wishing to protect confidential information from leaving the company unauthorised, can take advantage of the system`s Text Censors feature. "Rules can be set up to look for messages containing specific words or phrases in the content of an e-mail message. Should the text censors be triggered, the receiver and sender are both notified of the e-mails that have been held back, and the administrator is notified," says Botha. "The number of rules that can be set up is unlimited."

One of the most important features is the Usage Reports. The reports allow the user to have full understanding of the amount of e-mail traffic on his network. The e-mail traffic can be tracked by time, by individual user, by bandwidth and by messages.

"By controlling inbound and outbound e-mail traffic of companies, we feel that the general productivity of their workforce will increase, confidential information will remain confidential, money will be saved and internal network bandwidth will be utilised more effectively," says Botha. "More effective and efficient use of bandwidth will reduce the need to upgrade unnecessarily, thereby reducing costs."

The service is accompanied with a user manual that will allow users without a network administration background to be able to administer this service with ease. For companies to obtain the service, they require their own domain name in order to use it.
