Netfinity servers to be preloaded with Win2K

Johannesburg, 07 Apr 2000

JSE-listed Faritec has welcomed the announcement from IBM that it is to preload Microsoft`s new Windows 2000 Server operating system onto its Intel-based range of Netfinity servers.

"This is the first time IBM has preloaded an operating system on the Netfinities," says Faritec MD Allan Timm. "This is good news for the entire channel and for Netfinity customers. Because IBM takes care of the hardware and software configuration, Netfinity business partners can concentrate on other services - including Windows NT and Unix migration to Windows 2000 and clustering services - that are more important and more profitable.

"Many companies and analysts have been assessing the pros and cons of Windows 2000 Server. This early commitment sends the right signals to customers that their best interests are being served."

In terms of an initiative launched concurrently with Windows 2000, from April IBM will preload and preconfigure Windows 2000 Server on Netfinities. By preloading Windows 2000 on its servers, Timm says, IBM can fulfil customer orders more quickly.

In addition, IBM`s Netfinity group has developed Netfinity Director, a program for its server line that allows system administrators to view and hardware configuration information stored under the Windows Management Instrument (WMI) interface with software configuration information stored under the Common Information Model (CIM), all within one interface.
