The South African Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC-ZA) will present a full-day workshop on network data security this Thursday at the University of the Witwatersrand. The event will feature talks, workshops and a panel discussion.
The society says it will present two tracks, one aimed at people who need to understand security, but who do not have an in-depth background, and a "technical" track, for those with an existing background in data security.
This is the first workshop of its kind to be held in SA and could become an annual event.
Topics will include encryption, firewalls, intrusion detection, hackers and hacking, networked viruses and worms, legal issues, digital signatures and certificates, authentication and security management.
Also to be discussed is the possible creation of a South African incident response team (ZA CERT). The US Computer Emergency Response Team is a federally funded organisation that co-ordinates the response to new threats to data security and has proven quite successful in reducing the damage done by hostile code.
"Meet the computer cops" will feature a question-and-answer session with members of the South African Police Service.
