Networks Unlimited announces more breakthrough technology from IronPort Systems

IronPort virus outbreak filters detect and stop viruses before any other technology.

Johannesburg, 21 Oct 2005

Networks Unlimited, distributor for IronPort Systems, the world leader in e-mail security, has announced the availability of the newest version of IronPort`s high performance operating system AsyncOS version 4.5, the largest software release in the company`s five-year history.

The new software includes second generation technology for stopping virus outbreaks, innovative new technology for handling bounce messages, and carrier grade technology for managing global system deployments. The features and functionality of IronPort technology provide organisations unmatched virus protection, unprecedented ease of use and reduced total cost of ownership.

IronPort`s Threat Operations Centre reported a new outbreak of the Mytob variant virus, providing advance warning of the new virus spreading globally via e-mail.

The Mytob variant virus was discovered by IronPort Systems on 2005-10-18. At this time e-mail messages with this virus were quarantined for IronPort customers, providing advanced network protection.

IronPort Systems has raised its threat level indicator to an elevated level and has begun quarantining these e-mail messages for customers. For all networks that are not IronPort Virus Outbreak Filter customers, be on the lookout for e-mail messages with dangerous attachments.

IronPort`s proven virus outbreak filters are even more effective

IronPort started an industry trend when it first introduced Virus Outbreak Filters in June 2004. IronPort`s Virus Outbreak Filters analyse global traffic patterns to identify anomalies and then quarantine potential outbreaks until the traditional anti-virus signatures are updated. This breakthrough technology has provided protection an average of 13.6 hours ahead of signature availability for more than 100 major outbreaks. This translates into approximately 5 million infected messages stopped by IronPort`s Virus Outbreak Filters, which would have otherwise infected desktops, saving IronPort customers an estimated $100 million in cleanup costs.

Real world results show an average lead-time over reactive anti-virus solutions of 14 hours.

E-mail virus messages continue to increase at a rapid rate. In addition to the threats listed above, IronPort has detected over 140 viruses since its launch in 2004. Included in this list are multiple variants of the popular and dangerous Bagle, Netsky, Sober, MyDoom and MyTob viruses. Analysts in the IronPort Threat Operation Centre used IronPort Virus Outbreak Filters to detect multiple "Bagle" variants including but not limited to Bagle.BE, .BF, .BB, .BD, .BG on 27 February 2005 at 10:39 (GMT) and the first anti-virus signature became available 41:43 hours later. Another remarkable result was the detection of MyTob.G on 24 March 2005 at 23:30 (GMT) with the first anti-virus signature available 13:28 hours later.

IronPort Systems is the leading e-mail security products provider for organisations ranging from small businesses to the Global 2000. The company has developed a family of e-mail security appliances, the IronPort C-series, which offer breakthrough performance, unprecedented ease of use, reduced total cost of ownership, and is shipped with pre-loaded Symantec Brightmail, the industry leader in anti-spam technology. IronPort is driving new standards and providing innovative products for those faced with the monumental task of managing, protecting, and growing mission-critical e-mail systems.

IronPort has over 1 500 customers spanning 45 countries, including governments in 10 nations. In Q4 2004, IronPort added more than 30 Global 2000 companies as new customers and won the largest purchase in e-mail security history, delivering a large-scale system for the US Federal Government. IronPort powers and protects the e-mail for six of the 10 largest ISPs in the world, six of the 10 largest technology companies, and five of the 10 largest media companies.
