3Com has released a new range of dual speed (10/100Mbps) switches designed to simplify network configuration, eliminate common cabling problems and provide network traffic prioritisation.
"The new OfficeConnect range is designed to simplify the building of new computer networks or the upgrading of existing networks," says 3Com SA country manager, Chris van Niekerk.
"It also simplifies the addition of users, the support of new applications - such as integrated voice and video services - and upgrades for increased performance."
Van Niekerk says a key benefit is that companies can get their computer networks up and running without spending time on configuration. "This simplicity is invaluable to smaller businesses without dedicated technical personnel," he adds.
According to 3Com, this announcement reinforces its commitment to deliver best-in-breed Ethernet switches that are easier to own, install and manage.
The switches are an integral part of 3Com`s strategy of offering comprehensive networking solutions that also include network telephony, wireless and Web applications.
From a technical perspective, the new OfficeConnect switches detect the Ethernet cable type being used and automatically adapt to make the connection. This eliminates the task of manually detecting and resolving common cabling errors. The switches, with 5 or 8 port capacity, will integrate into an existing network and automatically adjust to the environment without user intervention.
Another feature of the new switches is network traffic prioritisation. The switches are "voice-ready" and enable users to support network telephony such as 3Com`s NBX Ethernet LAN-based telephony solution. Traffic prioritisation will ensure that applications such as voice or video take priority and run effectively over the network. The feature is based on the 802.1p standard and does not require additional configuration during installation.
As new applications are added to the network, traffic prioritisation will ensure high-speed connectivity even during periods of heavy traffic.
