New Apache out
Just days after the SlapperWorm ran amok on its Web server platform, the Apache HTTP Server Project has released a new version of its open source application. Billed as a bug-fix release, the new Apache release does include a number of new capabilities, one being the ability to run the server in a hybrid thread or process mode on any platform that supports threads and processes. The benefit is that the process substantially boosts the scalability of the Web server. Apache 2.0.42 also includes support for filter I/O, allowing the server to modify the output of modules before it is sent to the client, as well as support for IPv6 on IPv6-compliant platforms. Apache is the most widely used Web server on the Internet and the most recent release is already available for Unix, BeOS, OS/2, Windows and Netware.
AMD shows off Hammer, joins Linux

At the AMD Developer Symposium, focused on the Linux and open source developer communities, AMD is paving the way for a bigger move into the open source world. On show and under discussion at the symposium is AMD Hammer technology, the company`s soon-to-be-released 64-bit processors. The company said at the symposium that the Linux server market was one of the fastest growing market segments and as such the open source community will play a crucial role in the roll-out of 64-bit computing.
