New 'barebones` server from Rectron

Johannesburg, 12 Feb 2001

Rectron has launched a new "barebones" server from its principal, Gigabyte Technology that is rack-mountable and designed for web, mail or gateway server applications.

The server is a "stripped down" appliance, according to Rectron IT manager, Alan Michas, without the frills of a stand-alone server and available at around a third of the price.

"This Gigabyte server has a unique `hot-swappable` hard drive feature that allows RAID technology to be used where applicable," he says.

"The most important benefit of the server is its ability to slot into a standard 19-inch rack and so take up minimal space in the wiring cabinet."

Michas says the new server is targeted at businesses that do not need all the components of a fully featured server.

"It`s a good deal for resellers who want to offer their customers a cut-price option now, with room to grow," he adds.

The package includes a common installation routine, centralised monitoring and management of services and users, and an easy-to-deploy client access tool.

Key features of the "barebones" server include integrated setup routines and customisable management consoles designed to save time and make the installation proceed more smoothly. Remote-monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities facilitate problem-free operation.
