African independent telecom tower company, Eaton Towers, has appointed Jimmy Eisenstein as non-executive chairman.

Eisenstein was co-founder of American Tower Corporation (ATC), where he was responsible for all acquisitions and development, in 1995. Today, ATC is one of the world's most valuable listed tower companies.

He retired from ATC in 2004 and has since been founder and CEO of a number of companies, including Concourse Communications, Optasite and - from 2010 until now - Grupo TorreSur, the largest privately-held towerco in Brazil.

Eisenstein takes over as Eaton Towers moves to its next stage of development, owning over 5 000 towers (pro forma for acquisitions) across seven countries in Africa.

Eaton Towers is majority owned by the sixth global emerging markets private equity fund ($3 billion) of Capital Group Private Markets and minority shareholders, including a private equity fund advised by Development Partners International and management.

Eisenstein says he joins Eaton Towers at an "exciting stage of the company's development".

He replaces outgoing chairman and co-founder Sanjiv Ahuja, who has agreed to continue as a director of the company.
