New Check Point UTM security appliances set to address mid-market

Johannesburg, 29 Mar 2007

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and a distributor of Check Point Software Technologies, today announced the latter's powerful new line of unified threat management (UTM) appliances, called UTM-1, offering medium-sized businesses and enterprise regional sites complete, multi-layered protection against Internet threats such as spyware, viruses, network attacks and more.

UTM-1 security appliances are a unique, tailored solution based upon Check Point's proven enterprise security expertise and the company's vision of a unified security architecture for businesses.

The appliances are easily deployed and can be centrally controlled to help simplify management for multiple sites, while providing the same uncompromising level of security used to secure the networks of Fortune 1 000 companies.

"We created the new UTM-1 line to enable medium-sized businesses and departmental-level offices to take advantage of all the security and productivity benefits of our enterprise solutions, in a platform specifically designed for their environment," commented Gil Shwed, chief executive officer of Check Point Software Technologies.

"Check Point now delivers optimised solutions for any size network deployment: VPN-1 Power for the most demanding large-scale networks, VPN-1 Edge UTM for remote/branch offices, Safe@Office for small businesses, and now the ultra-flexible UTM-1 for mid-sized network deployments."

Beyond protecting against traditional threats through tightly-integrated security features including a stateful-inspection firewall, IPSec VPN, gateway anti-virus and anti-spyware, and intrusion prevention, Check Point's new UTM-1 product line also features an innovative Web Application Firewall to help protect Web servers, as well as advanced security functions for voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), instant messaging and peer-to-peer networks.

Integrated Check Point SmartCenter management delivers centralised, built-in security management without the need for additional hardware or software. UTM-1 also enables secure connectivity for remote workers using integrated SSL VPN technologies, and gives IT administrators greater visibility into their network infrastructure through comprehensive monitoring and reporting features.

"UTM security appliances are the only logical choice for a company our size, but there are a lot of UTM products to choose from," added David Wyers, director of network operations, Southern DataComm. "We chose UTM-1 because of the Check Point brand and their history of being a strong security company in the industry. We were able to deploy UTM-1 very quickly and setting policy was easy through their intuitive, integrated, centralised management console SmartCenter, which will allow the product to scale as our business grows."

Check Point's UTM-1 line also leverages Check Point's Unified Security Architecture. UTM-1 appliances deployed at enterprise branch offices seamlessly plug-in to an existing Check Point environment, helping administrators to quickly prioritise security events, effectively distribute updates and consistently enforce policy across the enterprise. Customers will also benefit from the ability to upgrade to new technologies such as Web filtering and many others as they become available. Check Point's UTM-1 appliances can be deployed as a standalone solution, managed as part of a larger network environment from a single onsite location or managed remotely.

Larger businesses already using Check Point enterprise solutions at headquarters can also utilise their existing SmartCenter/Provider-1 infrastructure to deploy policy remotely to a UTM-1 appliance at a branch office.

"Customers don't need to compromise the security level they need to get the simplicity they want. UTM-1 is more than a new brand. It's the total solution, created specifically to offer the power and ease-of-use required to meet the security challenges of mid-sized installations," continued Shwed. "With the peace of mind offered by a complete security solution, businesses can truly realize the value of their network investment."
