A new consortium is being formed with a view to taking over AfriCam, the popular local wildlife Web site whose SA services applied for provisional liquidation last week.
The consortium includes an export facilitator for small businesses, a tourism promotion authority, a local booking engine and an Internet service provider. However, the group does not wish to make any announcements before the liquidators have completed their assessment of the AfriCam situation and the deals have been finalised. The takeover is likely to involve a multimillion-rand deal.
A spokesman for the group, based in Cape Town, says the consortium aims to boost business and tourism development through the AfriCam site. He says the site has become part of SA`s "national heritage" and has the potential to become highly profitable, once new business models are in place.
The spokesman says the consortium has been planning the move for some time, since the first warning signs of trouble at AfriCam became apparent. The group hopes to have the site live later this week, and will make further announcements once a deal has been finalised.
