An innovative solution to the difficulties experienced by computer users in storing multimedia files, digitised photographs, Internet downloads and other large files on standard 3,5-inch diskettes is one of the highlights of the SDD Technology Showcase. Organised by Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), SA`s largest broad-based IT distributor, the national Technology Showcase marks the SA launch of Imation`s SuperDisk LS-120 and the Imation LS120 Drive, heralding a new era in data storage. According to Anton Joubert of Imation, LS-120 technology is setting the standard for high-capacity removable storage media. Most leading computer manufacturers current support LS-120 technology and include the drives in their desktop and notebook PCs. The new Imation SuperDisk, which will be featured at the SDD Technology Showcase, is the only diskette in the world with 120MB of storage and the simplicity of a standard diskette. "Imation SuperDisk diskettes look just like the floppy diskettes you use today. They are as reliable and work in the same way," Joubert explains. "However, to use the diskettes, you will require an LS-120 compatible drive - like the internal or external Imation LS120 diskette drive - on your PC." A significant advantage of the Imation LS120 diskette drive, which will be available at a special price for the duration of the SDD Technology Showcase, is that it is backwardly compatible. "It accepts standard 3,5-inch high-density and double density diskettes which means you can keep on using your existing diskettes and expand with SuperDisk diskettes as your needs grow," Joubert adds. Also expected to arouse considerable attention during the Showcase is a new family of automated tape back-up systems. Called ITL (Imation Tape Library), these systems offer PC server users the ability to automatically back-up, archive and restore data for increased capacity and performance in network environments running under Netware, Unix and Windows NT. Developed in collaboration with industry partners StorageTek and Tandberg, the Imation ITL family has the advantage of being compatible with major tape and cartridge storage platforms including DDS, MLR and Travan technologies. The SDD Technology Showcase kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
