New EOS 300V - a bold new design for the world`s best-selling SLR

Johannesburg, 16 Sep 2002

Aimed at the amateur photographer, Canon`s new EOS 300V is set to be the new standard model for auto focus (AF) SLR cameras. With sleek new styling and enhanced features the EOS 300V is a step up on the world`s best selling EOS 300. With better basic features than its predecessor and advanced design, the camera remains intuitive and easy to use.

"The EOS 300V is the new face of Canon`s consumer SLR cameras," says Roger Machin, Product Manager for Photo/Video Products at Canon SA. `With improved technology and new design this camera should remain as the worlds number one selling SLR camera."

Thanks to a new microcomputer and algorithm, the EOS 300V has the fastest AF in its class. Along with the widest AF area in its class, the camera focuses quickly, even with off-centre subjects. A superimposed display in the viewfinder shows which of the 7 AF points has achieved focus.

An orientation detection sensor prioritises different AF points when the camera is held in horizontal or vertical position, so that the camera can discern the target subject more accurately.

The EOS 300V features a stable predictive focus-tracking system that ensures accurate focusing even with a moving subject, similar to high-end cameras.

A new coreless motor and the improved mirror-locking system allow the EOS 300V to reach an improved film advance speed of 2.5 frames per second. A larger LCD display (30 x 30mm), which can be illuminated by pressing a button, and a dioptric adjustment button (-2.5 to + 0.5 dpt) in the viewfinder add to the overall user friendliness of this camera.

Also new to this model is an added Programmed Image Control function of "Flash off" mode to disable the flash or external speedlites for places where flash photography is not permitted or inappropriate. Other extra features include a metal mount and improved battery life.

Retaining the basic features of the EOS 300, such as 35-zone metering, the EOS 300V is smaller while at the same time sporting a novel design, which sets it apart from any other model.

The EOS 300V sheds the old look of EOS for a new-generation universal look that is smaller, yet still a pleasure to use. A new low-contrast, two-tone metallic finish definitely sets this camera apart from previous models and heralds a new look for Canon SLR cameras.

This reduction in size was made possible by the following main design points:

* Newly-developed compact focal-plane shutter

* The back cover lever repositioned on back cover

* The forward inclination of the viewfinder optics

* Vertically orientated batteries

* High-density mounting of components

The grip of the 300V has been redesigned for optimum comfort despite the small body of the camera. The Command dial on the right shoulder of the camera now enables one-hand operation for added functionality.

The EOS 300V comes equipped with a whole new collection of accessories such as: Battery Pack BP-220 (dedicated to EOS 300v), Semi-hard Case EH 15-L, Eye Cup Ef And Rubber Frame Ef.

The following new lenses to be launched simultaneously are advised as best matching for the EOS 300V:

* EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II

* EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM

* EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6
