New FTP server at IS

By Internet Solutions
Johannesburg, 07 Jul 1999

The Internet Solution (IS) has upgraded the largest FTP (file transfer protocol) server in Africa to better serve the thousands of users who access this site every day. According to IS Infrastructure MD, Derek Wilcocks, this is another step in IS` drive to build the best e-Business network in South Africa. This follows on IS` announcement that it is upgrading to 61 Mbps of international bandwidth in July making IS the premiere hub of national and international bandwidth in Africa and the ideal place to locate and update data repositories such as FTP and News servers, web, and application servers.

Wilcocks states that this service will substantially improve access for IS` corporate, dial-up, university, and 2nd-tier provider customers to over 80 Gigabytes of the most popular files on the Internet. The new IS FTP server is built on redundant dual PII/400 machines serving data off a Netapp Filer F740. This platform has twenty times the performance of the previous IS FTP site. It holds over 80 gigabytes of data and includes mirrors of several linux distributors (redhat, debian, slackware, jurix), FreeBSD, a mirror of gamecity, and various freeware and shareware Microsoft applications (see http://ftp.is.co.za/ for a full list). "We`re also running a new ftp daemon which should also help in speeding up ftp services," says Wilcocks.

IS also has an ftp search engine running on the machine. This can be found at http://archie.is.co.za and indexes several other local ftp servers as well as ftp.is.co.za, making finding the file you`re looking for a cinch.
