New glass Canon

Johannesburg, 30 Aug 2010

Hot on the heels of last week's Ixus, Powershot and Legria introductions, Canon has now unveiled its latest professional-level SLR camera, the 60D.

Replacing the 50D, the difference between the two is more than just 10 - the new model has a Vari-angle LCD screen, which makes shots at awkward angles a lot easier. Simply tilt the screen to face either up or down and frame your shot using Live View.

The 60D gets upgraded to an 18-megapixel sensor, a modest three-megapixel boost over its predecessor, with the new sensor offering a much better ISO range. End result? Better photos in low-light conditions. In fact, many of its specifications put it squarely between the superb, cheaper 550D and the more professional 7D. Canon says the price will reflect that too. A bit of clever engineering to make sure there's not too big a gap between the two aforementioned models.

No DSLR announcement would be complete without some new lenses, though. To that end, Canon announced 300mm and 400mm lenses. Both have a maximum aperture of f/2.8, to let in lots of light in darker conditions, and to aid that both are also equipped with version two of Canon's IS (image stabilisation) system.

colour for its professional lenses. So expect a professional pricepoint for these three pieces of glass.

There are also two new focal extenders, offering 1.4x and 2x magnification. A whole bunch of new tech has gone into these - mostly with the coating on the glass and the arrangement of the lens elements - making these high-end extenders a perfect match for existing L-series lenses.

And lastly, for us mere mortals who can't afford expensive optics, there's a new 8 - 15m fisheye zoom. This is special in that it's the first fisheye zoom with the ability to produce circular or full frame images. It's probably not everybody's cup of tea but recreational photographers will love the creative opportunities something like this brings with it.

Expect these new bits of kit to start popping up in the coming months - no doubt, some will be reviewed right here by yours truly.
