New govt site live with faulty links

The government`s new-look Web site has gone live as promised - but few of its information links work yet.

President Thabo Mbeki said in opening Parliament in Cape Town last week that the government`s Batho Pele Gateway would be launched within the next two months to provide streamlined government services online.

In a sudden switch, the government`s old Web site, which contained useful links to speeches, events, government contact details and news, was replaced overnight with a newly-designed Batho Pele home page.

One of the few working links on the page takes the user to a "Why the new look?" information page, which explains that the site is now a "single-entry point to both government information and government services".

The new 'services` links take users to the government`s services portals, but the links to previously-available information, contact details, speeches and news delivered only error messages this morning.

ITWeb cold not contact government spokesmen for comment since their contact details were no longer accessible.
