New graphic processing unit heralds the dawn of PC level cinematic computing

Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2003

Rectron has announced the release of a new graphics processing unit (GPU) from its principal, NVIDIA, said to expand the current limits of 3D graphics technology in the PC environment, placing them on par with Hollywood-style movies.

The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU combines with NVIDIA`s CineFX engine to introduce cinematic-quality special effects and studio-quality colour to the PC for the first time. One key to the step forward is a new level of advanced shading techniques.

When combined with NVIDIA`s drivers and software features, the GeForce FX allows applications and games to run at significantly higher resolutions and speeds than have been possible up to now.

"Both power and realism, the two elements every gamer craves, are at the heart and soul of the combination," says Reon Coetzee, Rectron`s marketing manager. "They represent everything a power gamer needs, and are delivered by impressive, 8 pixels per clock performance, an expansive AGP 8X pipeline and innovative support for high-speed DDR2 from the GeForce FX.

"By matching film-industry levels of precision processing, the NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU enables 3D worlds and characters to come alive - making Hollywood dreams on the desktop a reality," he notes.

Coetzee says the GeForce FX GPU, which also features NVIDIA`s Intellisample technology, is the first GPU to include Z- and colour compression, Z-culling, anisotropic filtering and powerful antialiasing for all resolutions.

"These advances in compression and antialiasing techniques ensure realistic colour and smooth edges at all resolutions while maintaining high levels of performance," he adds.

"Gamers will see the most fluid frame rates possible at unmatched speeds for a truly realistic visual experience."

Technical perspective

The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU takes advantage of the latest and most sophisticated 0.13 micron process technology by packing nearly twice the transistors into the same space as the GeForce4 Ti GPU.

The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU was engineered with optimisations that enable spectacular content and takes full advantage of a new generation of software tools and APIs, including the new Cg high-level shading language, DirectXR 9.0, and OpenGLR 1.4.

This enables game developers to design higher quality content faster than ever before.

The commitment to engineering excellence has made the NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU the development platform of choice for next-generation, cinematic-quality games.

The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU eliminates many programming barriers previously associated with pixel shaders by supporting long programs for the most elaborate effects, and conditional branching capabilities for better program flow.

The result is more advanced effects that were once impossible to create in real-time. In addition, the innovative graphics pipeline of the NVIDIA CineFX engine has the built-in capacity to deliver true studio-quality 128-bit colour processing, or 32-bit components for red, green, blue and alpha values.

The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU leverages the company`s Unified Driver Architecture (UDA), ensuring simple software installations and upgrades.
