IT technology manufacturer, NEC has appointed Masahiro Yoshikawa as president of its African operations.

Part of his goals this year will be to lead NEC's sub-Saharan African business and establish branch offices in Nairobi, Kenya and Nigeria.

Yoshikawa believes African governments are poised to reap the benefits of mobile infrastructure solutions, broadcasting systems and fingerprint/face recognition technologies.

He says NEC Africa's for 2012 is in line with the South African government's National Development Plan (NDP) for 2030. NEC identified seven opportunities as the cornerstones of the NEC Africa strategy in support of the NDP.

These include providing technology for public safety, and education enablement, and developing ICT solutions, renewable energy and water efficiency systems.

He says a key goal for NEC Africa is to expand into African regions, drive local partnerships and improve skills development.

He adds: “NEC aims to cover 48 countries in Africa; we are busy establishing our subsidiary in Nigeria, which we view as having big potential. The economic situation in sub-Saharan Africa is stabilising and NEC expects strong economic growth this year in its African operations.”

Yoshikawa has over 30 years' experience providing solutions and services to customers in the global IT and telecoms industries.

He previously held the role of deputy GM for the NEC's Middle East and African markets, and has worked at NEC's international sales and operations business unit.

NEC in EMEA achieved more than EUR1 billion in sales for the year ending in March 2011, and over $37 billion globally during the same period.
