New HP DeskJet 1220C printer delivers breakthrough wide- format features

Johannesburg, 03 May 2000

Hewlett-Packard Company has announced the HP DeskJet 1220C Professional Series colour inkjet printer, delivering professional-quality graphics output and high-performance text printing for business and home-office users with either PC or Mac systems.

The printer sets new standards for print quality and speed in the wide-format printer category. Now users can have both vibrant, photo-quality colour prints and unmatched speeds of up to 11 pages per minute (ppm) in black and 9.5 ppm colour with the HP DeskJet 1220C printer.

The incredible versatility of the DeskJet 1220C printer makes it a popular choice for small businesses, professional graphics users and home users. The printer has industry leading smart features designed for special projects such as booklets, posters and handouts, and creates eye-popping colour prints on A6 note cards up to A3+ posters.

"The DeskJet 1220C printer dramatically increases the visual impact of presentation and promotional materials for small businesses," said Wim Heuninck, HP marketing & sales manager, hardcopy products. "HP`s PhotoREt III Precision Technology matches original photo quality more closely than anything available on the market without sacrificing speed."

Groundbreaking Wide-Format Graphics

The DeskJet 1220C printer is the first wide-format product on the market to incorporate HP`s PhotoREt III Precision Technology. PhotoREt III Precision Technology uses up to 29 drops of ink for each dot that forms a printed image, allowing the printer to generate 17 different shade levels for each of the primary colours that can then be layered, creating a breathtaking palette of hues. The result is clear, sharp, vivid output on premium as well as standard papers. The HP DeskJet 1220C also features HP ColourSmart III technology, which analyses documents to optimise colour output quality and performance. Special image-processing algorithms are applied that produce more accurate images, including hard-to-reproduce skin tones in photographs.

HP SmartFocus, a HP ColourSmart III technology automatically enhances the quality and clarity of images from low-resolution sources such as the . For higher-resolution source images, an image enhancement algorithm intelligently sharpens and defines edges without increasing file sizes or slowing print speeds.

The DeskJet 1220C printer also offers an alternative photo mode that prints at 2,400 dots per inch (dpi) on photo paper.

Unique Media Capabilities

The DeskJet 1220C printer is the only wide-format printer with three paper paths, including a direct path accommodating media weights of up to 250g/m2. Enhanced Ease of Use

The DeskJet 1220C printer includes the following new ease-of-use features:

  • Low-ink warning - the user when ink is low;

  • Cancel-print button - instantly terminates jobs at the printer;

  • Automatic print-cartridge alignment - automatically aligns new print cartridges using an optical sensor and a test-page procedure;

  • Media width sensor - detects when a job requiring A3 paper is sent to the printer when the paper isn`t loaded, and notifies the user rather than continuing to operate and wasting ink.

Platform Support

The DeskJet 1220C printer ships with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, and Mac OS 8.1 drivers in-box, and supports both IEEE parallel and USB connects. It can be networked with an optional HP JetDirect print server and has a duty cycle of 5,000 pages per month.
