New HP ProLiant servers use AMD Opteron processors

Johannesburg, 09 Sep 2004

With HP`s recent inclusion of AMD Opteron processors in its ProLiant range of servers, two new units have hit South African shores with the intention of redefining price performance and easing the route customers are itching to take towards 64-bit computing.

"The use of AMD Opteron processors represents an evolution of x86 architectures that will provide immediate performance advantages in 32-bit environments and enhance the future of 64-bit ecosystems. This technology fills a gap in the x86 market and provides a transition for applications needing expanded memory capabilities." says Greg Pothitos, product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

"Using this approach customers will be able to carry-on running their existing 32-bit applications, begin migrating to new 64-bit Operating systems when they become available, as well as migrate to new 64-bit authored applications, before moving exclusively to a 64-bit Itanium server environment," Pothitos says.

Key innovations the new servers benefit from by using the AMD Opteron processor include an integrated memory controller, which reduces memory latency and HyperTransport technology, which increases overall performance by removing or reducing processor-to-processor and I/O bottlenecks. This increases bandwidth and enables the processor to use system memory more efficiently in high-end multiprocessor systems.

According to HP, the availability of these two new servers bolsters its existing range of ProLiant offerings and allows the brand to broaden its focus into every part of the datacentre.

The first of the two units, namely the ProLiant DL145 is designed to fit seamlessly into the high-performance computing (HPC) market, occupying a mere 1U space in a server rack.

It makes use of a single AMD Opteron 200 series 2.4GHz processor in its standard configuration, but can easily be upgraded to take full advantage of dual-processor operation.

In terms of memory capacity, the DL145 can address up to 16GB of two-way interleaved PC2700 memory, features an embedded dual-channel Gigabit network interface card (NIC) and for expansion features a single 133MHz PCI-X I/O expansion slot.

"The DL145 provides customers looking for HPC power an ideal low cost, high performance, density-optimised solution," says Pothitos.

The DL145`s larger brother, namely the DL585, is designed to serve customers with the most computing intensive requirements and can make use of four AMD Opteron 800 series 2.4GHz processors and a maximum of 64GB of two-way interleaved PC2100 memory to reach this goal. In its default configuration, the server comes primed for dual processor operation.

It also features an embedded NC7782 dual port PCI-X Gigabit server adapter and eight I/O slots for expansion of capabilities.

"With HP, customers now have the choice to pick the architecture that best suits their business needs. Whether it is the performance of a 64-bit with Itanium, or the 32-bit performance with built in 64-bit compatibility," concludes Pothitos.
