Huawei's latest flagship devices, the Mate S and MediaPad M2, will be available in SA this month, followed by the Huawei Watch later this year. This was announced at an event in Johannesburg last night.
The Mate S was unveiled in September at Europe's biggest consumer electronics show, IFA, in Berlin.
The smartphone has a 5.5-inch display and a curved full metal back. Key features include Force Touch technology and full DSLR camera capabilities. It comes in four colour options: gold, champagne, grey and pink.
Force touch allows users to do a host of new actions by applying a different level of pressure to the screen. For example, users are able to use their knuckle to draw a letter, which will open up the corresponding app. Drawing an 'M' will open the music app, while an 'E' will open the Internet browser.
The Mate S features fast charging and claims a 10-minute charge will give the user two hours of talk time.
The MediaPad M2 is an 8-inch all metal 4G tablet. Huawei says the device will last 30 hours before charging is required.
Both devices come with Huawei Select: a two-year warranty which allows for two free screen replacements for the Mate S and one free replacement for the Mediapad 2.
The company also highlighted its flagship wearable, the Huawei Watch. The smart watch is compatible with any phone or operating system; the user does not need to have a Huawei smartphone to use it.
Huawei has focused heavily on the style of the watch; making it resemble, as closely as possible, a high-end 'non-smart' watch. "It is a watch first and then a smart watch," says Huawei product manager, Nishal Sukdhoe.
The Mate S is already available in South Africa. The MediaPad M2 will follow at the end of this month, and the watch by the end of December.
Recommended retail prices for the devices are R11 000 for the smartphone and R5 999 for the tablet. Huawei Watch prices will be announced later this year.
