New Internet-connected storage appliance for SOHO users

Johannesburg, 23 Nov 2009

A new network-attached storage (NAS) appliance for business and home users has been announced by Duxbury Networking, the local distributor of Netgear products.

The Netgear Stora enables users to centralise data files as well as photographs, music and movies, allowing access to them from appropriate devices, such as laptops, PCs and smartphones attached to an office or home office network.

It also allows access to accredited users from any Internet-connected device, through an intuitive and graphical user interface on the MyStora.com Web site.

Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking, says Netgear's Stora is targeted at non-technical users, facilitating the sharing of data without the need to upload files to Internet sites or transfer them to remote users via e-mail.

“Stora represents the new-generation of storage devices,” he says. “In many ways it reflects recent advances in 'cloud computing', but without the often hefty price tags that come with services that stream data to off-site repositories for storage and archiving.”

According to Robb, many conventional storage devices aimed at this segment of the market, while competent at providing reliable storage capacity and data protection, are incapable of allowing access to stored data from outside the office or home - or across multiple devices.

Stora, an addition to Netgear's business- and prosumer-targeted ReadyNAS product line-up, is also able to serve content to networked devices such as Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-enabled photo frames, XBox 360 and PlayStation3 game consoles, and iPhone and Blackberry mobile phones.

With the option of two hard drives that automatically mirror data for added security, Stora comes with automatic backup utilities for PCs and Macs supporting the regular, automatic backup of individual system content.
