New Learning Centre of Excellence for project management

By IT Public Relations
Johannesburg, 21 May 2010

UMT Consulting SA, a local enterprise project management (EPM) solution provider, has launched the UMT Learning Centre of Excellence to equip project management professionals with the skills and abilities to define processes and knowledge areas that effect best practice, continuous improvement, governance and methodology.

The company offers solutions that consistently help clients build capacity and capability that support effective business decision-making and enhance business delivery performance. It assists clients in ensuring the operational delivery of their strategy through effective project, programme and portfolio management (PPPM).

According to UMT Consulting SA CEO Pieter Meyer, the UMT Learning Centre of Excellence is built on the science, philosophies and methodologies of PPPM. “We strive to empower people by transferring our extensive skills and experience in this specialised field. It is critical that our learners get it right the first time, not missing any objectives, requirements, milestones, thresholds and acceptance criteria.”

Successful PPPMs go beyond maintaining realistic expectation levels; completing projects within a budget, scope, time and resource constraints; they must have fully trained and equipped people resources to affect the high-performance that is required of the team. They must be skilled in collaboration, defining clear business cases, setting project goals, objectives, milestones and work packages for high performance and quality standards.

“Not only do we conduct maturity assessments, resourcing, coaching and mentoring of project teams, but we implement solutions, build capabilities that support effective business decision-making and enhance business delivery performance. We are dedicated to provide role-based and user education, and methodology and governance training as well as on-the-job skills transfer,” says Meyer.

PPPM training certifications include:

* Principles of Project Execution
* Principles of Project Planning
* PPM Earned Value Management
* PPM Project Accounting
* Project Management Office
* Fundamentals of Project Management
* Foundations of Programme Management
* Foundations of Portfolio Management
* Train the Trainer
* Project+ (Comptia) International

Once a PPPM technology has been selected, it must be utilised effectively. UMT Consulting SA will ensure that theoretical toolset training is combined with practical knowledge.

“PPPM environments are always unique and it is therefore important that specific training is provided on PPPM governance, processes and technologies. We offer three competencies that include process, methodology and governance training and we also assist in defining the training required to affect new standards in PPPM,” he adds.

Facilitation skills include stakeholder management facilitation involving strategy development, business case and project selection facilitations. It also includes communication management facilitation involving the scope statement definition, business driver definition, subject matter expertise as well as motivational speakers in the project programme and portfolio environment. Furthermore, UMT assists clients with performing role-based skill assessments as well as the development planning to raise resource competencies.

“We believe that we must prove our skills internally before we can offer them to our clients. We test our staff six monthly on the products we train as well as project management practices. We can say that our trainers are specialists in the PPPM field and that they place a premium on training, support and mentorship,” he concludes.
