New Lovegate virus variant discovered

Johannesburg, 26 Mar 2003

W32.HLLW.Lovegate.G@mm, a new mass-mailing worm and minor variant of the W32.HLLW.Lovegate.C@mm, has been discovered. Local security expert AVeS Cyber Security says the variant has mass-mailing and backdoor functionalities.

According to Symantec, the new variant of the much-publicised Lovegate worm spreads itself by trying to reply to incoming mail messages and to e-mail addresses that it finds in HTML files.

"This new worm has backdoor trojan capability and will attempt to copy itself onto all PCs on a LAN with the intention to infect the computers. It is definitely a nuisance and people should look out for attachments with an .exe, .pif or .scr file extension, "says Johan Botha, software engineer at AVeS Cyber Security.
