New Microsoft software licensing comes in effect soon

Johannesburg, 12 Dec 2001

Corporation have only a couple of months left to decide how they are going to deal with Microsoft`s new software licensing options, which comes into full effect at the end of February next year. Add this reality to the challenges IT managers already face stemming from increasingly complex computing environments, escalating administration costs and a shortage of qualified IT professionals.

"Today`s enterprise environments typically involve thousands of desktops connecting through a mix of network types. Such complexity demands the stable, centralised control of a desktop management system that runs over multiple network protocols while maintaining detailed software usage records, whether programs are launched from network servers or desktops," says Theo Fourie, country manager of Attachmate SA.

"When configured to do so, your desktop management application should intervene when licensing parameters are violated, by either sending a warning message or prohibiting launch of the offending program, making the issue of software licence management a cinch and avoiding the imminent consequences of licence violations."

Attachmate`s NetWizard, a powerful, low impact desktop management tool, will save customers money and help them reduce their Microsoft costs by enabling accurate audits and monitoring usage of software as well as managing the licensing.

"NetWizard can be used to collect software version and hardware information, automatically upgrade outdated programs accordingly, and monitor usage of those programs for licence compliance," says Fourie.

The application compiles desktop software and hardware inventory information through a variety of methods, including system files, application headers and DMI (Desktop Management Interface) records, taking an accurate snapshot of each desktop system.

"Appropriate for organisations of any size, NetWizard will be able to assist in meeting the stringent software management requirements that are about to become a reality for many of today`s global enterprises," he adds.

"Organisations should furthermore ensure that, when it comes to metering and licence control, their desktop management application supports network and desktop applications, multiple servers and remote users."
