New Perle CS9000 Console Server: 16 and 24 port versions

Johannesburg, 11 Apr 2001

Perle has introduced a new Console Server product, the Perle CS9000, which offers network managers a reliable and cost-effective solution to remotely maintain and monitor servers and other network devices over a LAN/WAN network.

The introduction of the Perle CS9000 Console Server broadens the choices available to help resellers meet the essential network connectivity requirements of their customers.

The Perle CS9000 is the ideal product to provide a simple, low-cost-per-port solution for remote management of distributed networks, for clients such as:

  • ISP`s

  • Data Warehouses

  • ASP`s

  • Large Corporate IT Centres

The Perle CS9000 is scheduled for general availability on 26th March 2001.

Description

The Perle CS9000 provides multiple connectivity to network devices and system consoles, using LAN/WAN or dial-in connections as appropriate. This allows an administrator whether networked or not, from anywhere in the world, to administer comms and server equipment.

The Perle CS9000 is available in either 16 or 24 serial port versions, housed in 1U high rack mountable chassis. Each serial port of the new Perle CS9000 is capable of providing up to 230 Kbps connection speeds. When power cycled the unit does not send a break signal that can be interpreted by some servers (e.g. Sun Sparc`s) as a signal to shutdown. This avoids the need to add patches to the Solaris O/S, which are required if using other terminal/console servers as a console management device.

The Perle CS9000 supports in-band management by allowing the administrator to Telnet to the appropriate serial port on the console server. With the Perle CS9000 in-band management functionality, administrators can gain access to attached device from anywhere on the LAN/WAN, provided the administrator knows the names or IP addresses of the CS9000`s. The Perle CS9000 also allows access to multiple devices simultaneously.

In the event of a network failure, the Perle CS9000 provides out of band access via a modem attached to one of the serial ports on the unit, allowing administrators to access attached devices and thus resolve network problems.
